Magazine
Evaluation
For our media coursework we had to create our own magazine.
Therefore I had to choose a genre of magazine which is football. We were asked
to investigate, real media texts and look at magazines with similar codes and
convention, in order to produce a successful specification of a genre of
magazine.
First of all my target audience is mostly male but also from
the age of 10-16, however as football has a target audience of all types of
people any age and any gender as it is probably the most famous sport, my
target audience would mostly be anyone who is interested in football. My front
cover will appeal to the target audience as there are many bright colours that
stand out and could attract the customer’s eye in a shop. The colour I have
chosen red and yellow are bright colours that will appeal to teenagers and kids.
However the front cover is not full of bright colours as the background is
mostly red and the font colour is black to make the magazine clear to read.
Therefore I have appealed to my wide range of different types of target
audiences. To find my target audience expectations for my magazine before we
started creating our magazine we had a task of creating our own questionnaire.
This would help me try to identify the expectations from the audience and what
the audience want on my website and need. The questionnaire we gave to people
had a range of open and close questions. The results of the questionnaire
helped me to identify many important features of the magazine. Important details
I found in the answers to the questionnaire is firstly mainly only young people
would buy a football magazine. I also found the price of my magazine via the
questionnaires which is £1.99, as not many people buy magazines regularly due
to other news platforms like the internet and television. I also found which
features were important to the target audience in a football magazine. Team
news and fixture were the most important, in which I went on to include these
features in my double page spread. On my front cover page there is a picture of
five of the best players in the world. This will attract the audience to want
to know about them and what they’re doing and aspire to be like them. We then
furthered our research by doing a focus group Q and A with a partner. This
allowed me to improve on my first draft of my magazine by understanding more
about what the target audience expect. I therefore edited my magazine and I
changed the font to make it clearer. Then I added pictures of myself and others
to make the magazine better and to engage more with the target audience and I
believe this improved my magazine overall. The institution I have used to
publish my magazine is the Four Four Two magazine. This is probably the biggest
football magazine in the world, as they publish different editions all around
the world and they usually use world recognized footballers on their front
cover. Therefore I decided to do the same thing on my front cover using 5 world
recognised stars to keep the corporate image of only being associated with the
best. I have continued to follow the corporate image by using bright colours
however I have used red to also differentiate the brand image.
One of the things I did was analyse the codes and
conventions of a music magazine, however I eventually decided to change the
genre of magazine to football and I believe this was the right decision. For
the magazine we created I kept on editing it and improving my website, for
example, before I create my double page spread sheet, I analyse a double page
spread sheet similar to my genre. The structure of my double page spread sheet
is set out just like the one I analysed with a big picture on the first page
and on the second the article. The image on my double page was initially two football
players representing their teams, however later identifying it would be better
if I got my own pictures, I therefore change this quickly. The stars in my
images are important as they are the most likely to attract the target
audience. I have chosen the biggest stars to represent the biggest club competition
as this is a fitting way to do so. Without the stars many people may not be
interested enough to buy the magazine. The Stars in my front cover represent
many different countries were they are from. The kits the players are in
represents the clubs they play for. We can identify which team they play for by
badge on the kit. My magazine goes against the hypothermic needle theory as my
website shows links to twitter and Facebook for more information. On my
magazine there is also a link to a website.
you make some good points, and as a way to set out the process it works well. You need to tell us more about the direct changes and shaping of the magazine in terms of TA feedback and expectations...you changes the front cover...but how and why?
